Abstract The Austrian art historian Alois Riegl (1858–1905), through his groundbreaking theoretical work, was to exert a profound influence on art history in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. With his formalist study Stilfragen (1893), he ventured a break with the normative art theories that had hitherto prevailed, placing at the center of his inquiry the previously neglected thematic category of ornamental motifs and designs, and examining their historical development from a cross-cultural perspective. Riegl’s study initiated a lively scholarly dialogue within this specific field of research in the German-speaking world, among whose important representatives were the German art historians August Schmarsow (1853–1936) and Wilhelm Worringer (1881–1965). In their respective studies Grundbegriffe der Kunstwissenschaft (1905) and Abstraktion und Einfühlung (1907/1908), they in turn articulated their own theories concerning the origin, role, and significance of decorative subjects as a form of cultural expression. The paper aims, through a comparative analysis, to outline the successive stages of this scholarly dialogue and to highlight the principal points of divergence among the theoretical positions advanced in the three treatises.
