Abstract
In the Purgatorio, the purifying nature of the ascent of the Mount is conveyed by delaying the
journey to ensure that the pilgrim arrives, with Virgil and Stazio, at the threshold of the Earthly
Paradise around 6am on the sixth day of travel. There, the events and ceremonies end at noon, a
time corresponding to the six hours spent in the Earthly Paradise by the sinless Adam and Eve.
